This powerpoint presentation begins by providing background information on the importance of baseline data in justifying a replacement program for water fixtures in Seattle single-family homes. Primary research objectives included:determine potentialwater/energy savings fromreplacing existing fixtures withhigh-efficiency ones in "average"homes;identify the average replacement(retirement) rate of plumbingfixtures and water-usingappliances; and,examine multiple showerheadtrends. Other research considerations included:obtaining a representative snapshot of water use, pressure,and hot water temperatures for existing home plumbingfixtures;getting diverse representative sample from single-familyhomes;make actual in-home measurement of flow rates andflushing volumes;overcome traditional barriers to in-home data collectionand privacy by using a unique home access system; and,creating a service area baseline for the rate of plumbingfixture replacement over time. Data collection and analysis, and fixture comparisons are presented. Conclusions were:sample was small, but fairly representative;high cost of in-home measurements generallylimits sample size and extensive research;creative alternatives can mitigate this;collecting robust baseline data is not simple andmust be done carefully; and,baseline data is critical for projecting savingsfor future programs, especially when pastprograms and code changes have altered themix.
