This paper summarizes much of what is currently known about the cyanobacteria, including the toxins they produce, the problems they have caused in water supplies, the methods of control that have been proposed, and the effectiveness of various water treatment processes for toxin removal. An American Water Works Association Research Foundation-sponsored project that was designed specifically to investigate the incidence of cyanobacterial toxins in North American lakes and reservoirs has recently been completed, and selected data from the draft report will be presented in this paper. Includes 25 references.
