Full Description

Small systems (serving fewer than 10,000 people) still face difficulties inmeeting the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Many technologiesavailable to large systems may not be suitable for small systems mainly becausethey are prohibitively expensive due to the lack of economies of scale.Furthermore, trained operators and maintenance personnel may not always beaffordable or available, which can lead to standards violations. As found in theNational Research Council study about small water systems, continuous technicaland financial assistance is still needed to help more than 54,000 small systemscomply with changing regulations. This study discusses some water treatmenttechnologies that small systems may use to provide safe drinking water to theircustomers, who are mainly residential. The technologies discussed here surfacedfrom responses to the questionnaire sent to thousands of small systems across thenation. The information was compiled into the National Drinking WaterClearinghouse (NDWC) Registry of Equipment Suppliers of Treatment Technologiesfor Small Systems (RESULTS) database, which is a public reference databasecontaining information about technologies in use by small water systems aroundthe U.S. Includes 13 references, tables.
