Full Description

Many packed column air stripping facilities were constructed in the 1980s toremediate municipal groundwater supplies contaminated with volatile organiccompounds (VOCs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), andbenzene. While the treatment equipment may have been built according to standardsin place at the time of construction, several of these air stripping towers havesince required major modifications in order to meet changing regulations orincreased water demands. This paper contains information outlining modificationsto existing air stripping facilities that have been undertaken in an effort toprepare these facilities for the 21st century. These modifications were requiredto accommodate new wells or when actual raw water VOC concentrations exceeded theoriginal design values. Modifications may also be required if new VOCs appear inthe raw water stream or if regulatory agencies impose stricter regulations.Specific examples of the modification of packed column air strippers include theinstallation of new water distribution systems, enhanced water distributionsystems, tower/packing extensions, and/or new air handling systems. Actual VOCperformance data from the modified facilities is presented from both before andafter system modifications. Additionally, this paper includes recommendations ondesign features that can be built into new air stripping towers to facilitatefuture modifications. Includes 2 references, tables.
