Full Description
In 1995 Des Moines Water Works, in consultation with CH2M Hill, began investigating the feasibility of utilizing Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) technology in a deep Midwestern aquifer. An Environmental Protection Agency Demonstration Grant was obtained, after which testing was conducted using an abandoned production well in the area. This paper touches briefly on the feasibility study conducted, regulatory issues encountered, design considerations related to using ASR in deep wells, and demonstration testing that was completed using the retrofitted well. The focus of the paper is on results of the feasibility investigation and demonstration testing. Aquifer suitability, water quality and compatibility considerations, as well as cost effectiveness of storing and recovering water form 2,500 feet below ground, are discussed from a utility's perspective.
