The detection of coliforms has, for several decades, been the most frequently performed analytical method for assessing bacteriological contamination of potable waters. While routine control of a treatment plant is relatively easy when bacteriological samples can be collected and tested on site, difficulties arise when water is obtained from remote sources. Budget and staffing restrictions may make it difficult to regularly monitor water quality. This paper describes an automatic on-line coliform detection system, called the Colilert 3000, which is useful in such situations.
