Full Description

The Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) required the Cincinnati Water Works (CWW) to evaluate its current method of corrosion control. Although the 90th percentile lead levels for the LCR monitoring were well within the guidelines, CWW made a decision to investigate an alternative corrosion control method. Potential reduction of the 90th percentile lead levels and the ability to meet future regulations were the goals of this investigation. Orthophosphate products applied at levels of 3 mg/L had previously been shown, by coupon tests, to reduce lead corrosion. Therefore, a 24-month study was conducted to evaluate the impact of orthophosphates on existing scales in older, unlined cast iron pipes common in the CWW distribution system.
