Although silicates have been used to inhibit the corrosion of metal pipes since the late 1920s, the mechanism by which inhibition occurs is not well understood. This paper reviews various topics related to the use of soluble sodium silicates to inhibit corrosion. Topics covered include: metal corrosion and inhibition; characterization of silicate species in solution; known mechanisms of silicate film formation; review of experimental studies; and, results of surface analysis of pipes. Some particular issues that are addressed include: the effect on iron and manganese sequestration; the effectiveness of silicate treatment with and without pre-existing corrosion products; the effect of water quality on silicate film formation; and, the pH effect of silicate treatment.
