Full Description

The Safe Drinking Water Act requires that utilities meet water quality standards at the user's tap as well as at the end of the treatment train. Areas in distribution systems that experience high residence times, such as deadend mains, allow water to age, sometimes significantly, before being consumed. During this ageing process, the disinfectant residual decreases, offering an opportunity for bacterial regrowth which may affect the quality of the water. Within the Cincinnati, Ohio area, 23% of the drinking water distribution systems contain deadend mains, a few of which turn back on themselves creating a deadend loop. This study examined the behavior of drinking water in these deadend loops in order to understand how this can affect drinking water quality.
