Bacterial biofilms have been implicated in microbiological problems associated with the drinking water industry for some time. These attached bacteria have also been linked to biologically-enhanced corrosion of pipe materials. Nitrification is another biofilm-associated problem in some drinking water systems. These problems are further complicated by the remarkable resistance of bacteria within biofilms to disinfection. This paper defines biofilms and briefly discusses the problems and benefits associated with biofilms in distribution systems.
