Source water protection is an important element in the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act which requires states to delineate and assess source water protection areas for all their public water supplies. Water suppliers have a lot at stake in the outcome of this process and are in a unique position to influence state programs and source water protection partnerships. Their monitoring data may be crucial to evaluating source waters, tracking contaminant sources and assessing the effectiveness of water quality protection activities. This paper discusses some of the analytical tools with which water suppliers can look upstream. It also provides examples of how these tools are being used to encourage the protection of source waters.
