Full Description

In 1992, the US Environmental Protection Agency proposed a draft version of the Groundwater Disinfection Rule (GWDR) in response to the 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act that requires disinfection of all public water supplies. The GWDR could require an unspecified level of disinfection for groundwater supplies and would be formulated in a manner so as to protect groundwater supplies from contamination from human enteric viruses. Advanced molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction and cell culture methods allow routine monitoring of source or finished water for the presence or absence of viruses. The objective of this research was to develop such a technique to be used by water utilities to permit an assessment of the applicability of the GWDR.
