Full Description

Giardia and Cryptosporidium are two kinds of pathogenic protozoa which can be found in drinking water and can pose a significant threat to public health. Considering the prevalence of these microorganisms in raw water, evaluation of the efficacy of disinfection with respect to protozoa is very important. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the disinfection efficacy of a chlorine-chloramine scheme on post-filtration source water with seasonal quality variations. A bench-scale reactor system was set up and excystation procedures for Giardia and Cryptosporidium were used to determine the amount of inactivation which occurred in different seasonal waters. The data were statistically analyzed to determine the significance of variation in the source water and how the data compared to the inactivation predicted by the USEPA CT tables.
