One of the most common complaints from drinking water consumers in the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area is that of an earthy-musty odor imparted by 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin. The problem is compounded by three separate sources of surface water and an extensive canal system. In this study, surface water sources and strategic sites along the canal system were monitored for algae, cyanobacteria, actinomycetes, MIB, geosmin, nitrate, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature. An analysis of the correlations among these parameters may suggest a measurement to be used as an early warning system for taste and odor episodes. This paper also reports the results of studies undertaken to prevent the formation of MIB and geosmin using aeration, different degrees of shading and alternative algicides. A novel method that uses solid phase extraction for the analysis of MIB and geosmin is also described. Product Details
