Catalyst screening experiments evaluated 15 titanium dioxide (TiO2) powders, including five commercially available samples and 10 experimental catalysts developed in the laboratory. Photoassisted heterogeneous catalytic oxidation (PHCO) experiments performed on two alum-coagulated surface waters showed that increasing the contact time and incident light intensity destroyed more nonpurgeable organic carbon and decreased the disinfection byproduct formation potential. Economic analysis showed that PHCO using artificial light to activate the catalyst created high operations and maintenance costs and that using sunlight created high capital costs.
