Full Description

True batch experiments were performed on model waters to study the formation of bromate (BrO3-) and brominated organics, measured as total organic bromine (TOBr), during ozone-bromide interactions in the presence of natural organic matter. Preliminary experimental results indicated that significant levels of both BrO3- and TOBr can be formed. TOBr production ranges from 0.5% to 34% of the total initial bromide, with an average value of 7.2%. BrO3- formation ranges from less than 1% to 78% of the total initial bromide, with an average value of 16.6%. HO radical scavenger addition and pH adjustment have significant effects on BrO3- and TOBr formation. Depression pH and HO radical scavenger addition reduce BrO30 production, but promote TOBr production. Hydrogen peroxide addition (.35 mg H2O2/mg O3) effectively controls TOBr formation but mixed results were observed for BrO3- formation. Ammonia addition decreased bromate formation, while mixed results were observed for TOBr production. Finally, both bromate and TOBr production decreased as ozone dose/DOC ratio decreased.
