Particle Size Analysis (PSA) is a relatively new technique to the water industry. One of the major factors in highlighting PSA as a potential tool for monitoring and controlling water treatment processes has been recent outbreaks in the United Kingdom of waterborne cryptosporidiosis. PSA provides a monitoring technique that is far more sensitive than turbidity measurement, especially at the smaller size ranges, typically 0.5-5 um. This is highly significant since cryptosporidial oocysts fall within this size range, thus the method has great potential for monitoring filtrate quality and optimizing the filtration process which is often the last and most vital line of defense in the water treatment process against these protozoa. The potential also exists for the application of this technique to other areas such as operation of GAC Post Adsorbers and coagulation control. Until very recently the cost of Particle Counters has been of the order of up to ten times that of a sensitive turbidimeter. This and the lack of widespread general experience in the use of the technique has been a factor in limiting its use to discrete investigational work at individual water treatment works. In Severn Trent Water, a series of such investigations has resulted in the optimization of the filtration process at a number of treatment works.
