Water reuse needs to be included in the water planning process. It is a concept that directly addresses the challenges of managing and extending our limited potable water resources and the safe and proper disposal of wastewater effluent. The subsurface drip irrigation concept presents a very viable and attractive alternative technology to conventional effluent disposal methods while simultaneously addressing the issues of water conservation and the irrigation needs of landscape and agriculture. This paper discusses the design, implementation, and management of two permanent subsurface drip irrigation projects in Hawaii using reclaimed water in accordance with the State of Hawaii's current reuse guidelines.
