Severn Trent Water provides vital water services to a population of 8 million people over 20 thousand square kilometers in the center of England. This paper discusses Severn Trent Water's philosophy of integration and standardization of the control of its processes, plant and networks including: instrumentation, local process controllers/automation, monitoring and control systems, decision support systems, management information systems. The author concludes that the establishment of standard design methodologies has enabled a consistent approach to the implementation of monitoring and control systems throughout Severn Trent Water and facilitated planned, progressive development and application of technology which is user oriented and cost effective.
