Object-oriented approach has been promoted in many instances as a modern approach in the software system development. This paper gives a general view in adopting this modern technique in the development of hydraulic modeling tools. The text introduces the main concepts behind the object-oriented philosophy before analyzing the implications they bear on the main components of scientific and engineering software development. The fundamental nature of the object-oriented approach and its corresponding benefits are first analyzed. Its application to the development of a sample hydraulic model is illustrated. The resulting benefits are then discussed.
