The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) is the nation's largest municipally-owned utility, delivering water and power to more than 3.6 million people, over a 465 square mile area of Southern California. The ever increasing complexities of supplying and distributing water in the naturally arid Southern California region prompted DWP to install a major SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. DWP evaluated many SCADA Systems and contracted for the development of a system that would adapt the technology to monitor and control its large water distribution system. The ultimate result of this effort, the Los Angeles Water System Data Acquisition and Control (LAWS-DAC) System, was placed in service in June 1992. This paper describes the DWP water system SCADA project including system requirements, testing and installation, training, system configuration, and future considerations. Product Details
