Full Description
This paper presents a brief overview of some of the key technical developments that make system integration truly feasible and some of the other, non-technical issues that must be considered prior to establishing internetwork links. As such, the paper can be considered as a conceptual planning document for integrating process control and MIS systems. The paper begins with a discussion of the elements necessary for successful integration, describes the current state of technology for each element, and reviews alternatives for implementation. The paper then describes the types of information transfers between process control and MIS systems that are likely to be useful within a water utility environment. A comparison of tools available for this transfer of information and a few specific examples where integrated systems could benefit water utilities in operations, maintenance, and engineering completes the analysis.
