The water industry uses chemicals for a variety of reasons. These chemicals are typically aggressive in nature and added in relatively small quantities. This combination makes it very difficult for a flowmeter to maintain reliable and accurate readings. This paper provides details on Controlotron's System 990DFT Low Flow Chemical Flowmeter. As its name implies, this flowmeter was designed specifically for the low flow measurement of aggressive chemicals common to the water industry. There are three important reasons to accurately monitor actual chemical usage: to improve accountability as the cost of chemicals rise; to comply with health or environmental regulations; for control or flow rate trending. The author offers a case study of the Appomattox River Water Authority (ARWA) as a practical example of the effectiveness of the 990DFT Low Flow Chemical Flowmeter. ARWA had been experiencing clogging problems and finally decided to install the System 990DFT. The 990DFT has been working flawlessly since its installation in September of 1993.
