Full Description
This paper describes the telecommunications revolution and how utilities can benefit from these new changes in technology. All aspects of the telecommunications movement are discussed, including, voice, data, video, image, and combinations of each of these. Several suggestions on how utilities can keep up to date on this changing industry are made and methods for incorporating this technology into utility operation and maintenance are described. For example, support for remotely monitoring unattended operations; increased utility operational efficiency due to electronic communications rather than paper-based communications; improved customer service by linking customer information systems with operational data; and increased utility competitiveness are some of the author's suggestions. The regulation/deregulation of the telecommunications industry are discussed and the changes in the market place are pointed out. Thus, this paper provides a number of steps which can be taken to best position a utility competing in the year 2000. Product Details
