This paper presents a general method, the Adaptive Search Algorithm, by which a water supply utility can optimally operate their pumps to deliver the required water at least cost. The Adaptive Search Algorithm uses the combination of a simulation model, KY-Pipe, and search technique to find a more economic solution. The Algorithm selects the least-cost combination of pumps for a feasible operating environment and then the simulation model solves for the pressures at each pump outlet. The cost order of the pumps are then re-calculated and the revised set of least-cost pumps selected. This interaction between the optimization model and the simulation model is continued until the improvement is negligible, usually only three or four iterations. This approach is being tested on the Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MLGW) and found to produce significant savings. It has the advantage of being able to be automated and integrated into a SCADA system.
