Introduction

Purpose.
To determine whether a vehicle's seat belt system meets the functional operation and design requirements of:
• Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 208 (FMVSS 208)
• Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 208 (CMVSS 208)
Applicability.
Passenger cars, trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with seat belt systems manufactured on or after September 1, 1991. Primarily applicable to vehicles having a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 4545 kg (10 000 lb) or less. Some sections may pertain to vehicles having a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) more than 4545 kg (10 000 lb). Although CMVSS 208 and FMVSS 208 requirements may apply, this specification was not written to evaluate the following (see FMVSS 208 for definitions):
• Forward Control Vehicles
• Open-Body Type Vehicles
• Vehicles Outfitted for Handicap Use
