In this paper, two methodologies are presented for determining the optimal control settings for chilled water systems that do not have significant thermal storage. A component-based nonlinear optimization algorithm was developed as a simulation tool for investigating optimal system performance. Results of this algorithm, implemented in a computer program, led to the development of a simpler system-based methodology for near-optimal control that is simplenough for on-fine implementation.
