This paper reports on a survey of the energy consumption of selected office buildings in Singapore. It included a postal survey of occupancy, mechanical equipment, and electricity consumption plus floor area measurement and other data from building plans.
Gross floor area of the buildings ranged from approximately 20 thousand to 900 thousand square feet (2000 to 80 000 square metres). Building energy performance based on the ratio of annual electricity consumption to building area, excluding car parks, was computed, and it was found that the average armual consumption was 15.8 kWh/ft (0.612 GJ/m). Notional consumption values, based on energy-conserving guidelines found in codes of good practices, were computed using generic models of office buildings and also using selected buildings and ranged between 10% and 80% higher than this average. Suggestions are made to adapt the concept of notional consumption for comparing building energy performance in future work.
