Prior to 1985, lighting manufacturers had been publishing data on the energy distribution of fluorescent luminaires operating in a heat exchange mode by returning room air through the lamp compartment. These data were of no value since there was no method of application.
In 1985, the electrical industry funded a pro.ject to investigate the test procedures with the object of finding an application method for calorimetric data on the luminaires.
Luminaires were found to respond linearly with respect to temperature differences between the occupied space and the ceiling cavity at a constant airflow rate.
This paper describes how that relationship can be used to optimize room loads.
