This paper summarizes the results of ASHRAE RP-450, "Water Flow Rate Limitations." The research project was in response to the need for establishing updated information on the available theoretical, experimental, and empirical data in the general area of water flow rate limitations. The need existed for an accounting of the validity of presently available information on velocity limitations, such as that published by manufacturers, found in previous investigations, obtainable from the technical and trade literature, and used commonly in practice. The information obtained was sought both nationally and internationally. Noise, erosion, pressure loss, corrosion, type of water service, piping materials, installation costs, and pumping energy costs combine to define the limiting criteria for water flow velocities. Contained in this paper are the results of the literature search and review process, the review and update of applicable material for the ASHRAE Handbook, and a discussion of the work proposed for Phase II of the research.
