A special muffler with the dual functions of reducing pressure oscillations and eliminating foreign materials has been developed. The muffler is intended to minimize the size and cost of tubing in refrigerating systems.
A brass straining screen was assembled in the copper expansion chamber of a muffler that had a 38 mm outer diameter and was 110 mm in length. The dimensions of the expansion chamber were determined, based on previous experience, without considering the effects of the screen. The shape of the screen was determined by previous careful examinations.
A prototype muffler, with assembled parts, was inserted and tested in the gas injection line between the compressor and liquid separator of a small heat pump. Test results have shown that the proposed muffler has successful attenuating characteristics.
