Low pressure (LP) or hypobaric storage of fresh commodities was discovered and patented by Burg and involves the use of a flowing stream of air, substantially saturated with water vapor at a reduced atmospheric pressure and controlled temperature.) Burg and Burg reported that LP storage extended the market life of avocados, bananas, Barbados cherries, guavas, limes, and mangos.2 Since then, the use of this system for tropical fruits has been under evaluation by researchers throughout the world. Principle findings to date are discussed in the present report.
